Howard F. Kale, Jr.

Financial Consultant, philosopher, businessman, dreamer, author...but ultimately, Howard F. ("Howie") Kale, Jr. is an Arabian horse breeder.

He comes with excellent credentials. His father, Dr. howard F. Kale, Sr. was on of the foremost breeders in the country. For over 34 years, he created one of the finest breeding farms in the world today.

Howie has inherited his father's eye for a horse and his dedication, as well as his capacity for vision.

Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1942, Howie received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Zoology from the University of Washington. he returned for graduate work in Genetics. That was soon followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, and finally as M.B. A. in Finance. Howie then combined a successful financial consultation career with an ongoing Arabian breeding farm in Seattle with his father.

Kale's Arabians utilized their foundation domestic bloodlines, infusing the blood of such imports as *Silver Drift, *Dornaba, *Bask and *Silwara (through their son, Tornado.)

An encounter in London with an Arabian stallion imported from Russia embarked Howie on a quest that has taken him to Russia on 28 separate occasions. Thousands of hours were spent translating the Russian Stud books into English and understanding their breeding program at Tersk Stud. After the exhaustive analysis, Howie's conviction and desire were strong to proceed with the selection and importation of 15 of the finest horses at Tersk, most of which are well-known champions in the US today. With increased knowledge and understanding, the Russian horses and breeding program soon gained widespread acceptance and support. But most importantly, Howie attained the all-important "Next step" in his breeding program.

A perfectionist by nature, Howie applied the same discipline and principles to his personal life. Not unit his 37th year did Howie finally find these same rare qualities he posses in another - idealism, faith, love of beauty and grace. He had the good sense to marry her in 1980, and Sandy and Howie kale now make their home in Scottsdale, Arizona along with their daughter Jenny.

It is seldom that you find Arabian horse people in complete agreement. But, be it critic, friend, admirer, parent, employee or acquaintance, in everyone's mind howie Kale is a true horseman and dedicated breeder. Their could be no higher accolade.

THE IMPACT OF THE RUSSIAN ARABIAN IN AMERICA

In 1976, through the efforts of Howard Kale, Jr. America experienced the arrival of the first significant importation of Russian-bred Arabian horses. The horses from Tersk had a powerful impact on those who saw them. But there were obstacles to overcome before the Americans opened their hearts and barn doors: The Arabian Horse Registry had not yet accepted these horses for registration: some said they never would.

Many were offended by doing business with the U.S.S.R. Some thought these horses weren’t a legitimate strain-type. Others claimed the Russian horses to be a fad: they would never catch on.

1978: The Registry accepted and approved the registration of the Russian Arabians.

1979: *PRISTAN hit the National show ring, winning her first Top Ten and leaving the spectators in awe.

1080: * MUSCAT was named National Champion Stallion of the United States and Canada.

The next two years saw two more Russian stallions, *MARSIANIN and *PADRON, named United States National Champion Stallion. The show ring would never be the same again. Arabian enthusiasts ere enchanted by the beauty, grace and motion of these horses: they honored their quality, their magnificence. They began to embrace them. The impact of these horses was obvious; it soon became profound.

Competition in the Arabian horse industry exists most visibly in the show and sales arenas of our country. The horses from Tersk have proven themselves in competition against all the rest.

Today there are less than 500 Russian imports in the United States with the majority being selected and/ or imported by Kale. They have to their credit an astounding Number of National and Reserve National titles and numerous Top Ten awards.

Impressive statistics – but awards are merely the public recognition, not the validation nor the creation of the value of these horses. The best Arabian horses from Tersk were the horses the breed had been waiting for. They represent the consummate outcross. Any knowledgeable breeder could discern these unique horses were bred for just this role. Their value then, is found in themselves, in their genetic characteristics, their ability to pass on, through inheritance, these superior traits. This is profound!

The Arabian horse industry now recognizes the Russian Arabian as the viable force it is. Its value as a show horse, as a breeding horse cannot be denied. The definitions for excellence, quality and value in the Arabian breed have become synonymous with the Russian Arabians and Arabian-bred outcrosses… the combination which has created the horse of KARHO.
